Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

Recipe by Jill Winger on YouTubeAdded 2 November 2026.

5 minutes to prep, 20 to cook. This simple steaming method makes fresh farm eggs peel effortlessly, eliminating the frustration of stubborn shells. By cooking the eggs with steam instead of submerging them, the membrane stays intact and the peel comes off cleanly, perfect for quick snacks, deviled eggs, or any dish that needs perfectly peeled hard‑boiled eggs.

Method

  1. 1

Place a metal colander or steamer basket inside a stockpot that has a lid.

  2. 2

Add about two inches of water to the bottom of the pot, making sure the water does not touch the eggs when the colander is in place.

  3. 3

Arrange the fresh eggs in a single layer (or as many as will fit) inside the colander or basket.

  4. 4

Cover the pot with the lid and bring the water to a rapid boil over high heat.

  5. 5

Once steam is vigorous, set a timer for 20 minutes and let the eggs steam without lifting the lid.

  6. 6

When the time is up, carefully remove the colander or basket and transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water to cool quickly.

  7. 7

After the eggs are cool enough to handle, peel them – the shells should slip off easily.

  8. 8

Optional: For an Instant Pot version, place a rack in the pot, add two inches of water, arrange the eggs on the rack, seal the lid, and set to high pressure for 4 minutes, then perform a quick pressure release and cool in ice water before peeling.

Tips while you cook

Keep water below the eggs
Add water only to two inches.
Do not lift the lid
Leave the pot covered for the full 20‑minute steam period.
Shock in ice water
Transfer the eggs straight to ice water after steaming to stop cooking and aid peeling.
