Method
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
While the rolls are still connected, use a bread knife to cut the package in half horizontally, creating a bottom and a top layer.
Place the bottom layer in a non‑stick or lightly buttered pan.
In a small bowl, combine the dark brown sugar and cinnamon.
Spread 1/4 cup softened butter over the bottom layer of rolls, then sprinkle 2/3 to 3/4 of the sugar‑cinnamon mixture evenly on top.
Place the top layer of rolls back over the bottom, spread the remaining softened butter on the top, and sprinkle the remaining sugar‑cinnamon mixture evenly.
Bake for 15 minutes, or until the rolls are lightly golden and the filling is bubbly.
While the rolls bake, make the icing: in a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter, powdered sugar, salt, milk (starting with 2 tbsp and adding more if needed for desired consistency), and vanilla extract.
When the rolls are done, transfer them to a serving plate, drizzle or spread the icing over the warm buns, and serve immediately.
Tips while you cook
- Soften butter before spreading
- Ensure the softened butter is at room temperature before spreading on the roll layers.
- Keep rolls connected when cutting
- Cut the package horizontally while the rolls remain attached to maintain the top and bottom layers.
- Adjust icing consistency gradually
- Start with 2 tbsp milk for the icing and add more only if needed to reach a drizzleable consistency.
